Coral reefs are one of the most beautiful and delicate natural phenomena on Earth but they are very sensitive to changes in the environment. One of the factors that influences this is the acidification of the oceans. Ken Caldeira, a climatologist, predicts that ocean acidification may be greater in the coming century than in the last 300 million years. Another global factor for coral decaying and fading is the rising temperature of the water. When the temperature rises above a certain point (it depends on the location and species), the symbiotic relationship of corals and coexisting creatures becomes disturbed. The bleached corals stop growing, and if their damage is very serious - they decay completely. According to a study published in the 2008 "Science" magazine, corals have become the most threatened group on the planet. It is estimated that by 2030 90% of the reefs around the world will be under threat, and by 2050 all will be under threat.

The project “Reef” includes photographs of objects made by Wróblewska entirely of recycled disposable plastic (bottles, mugs, straws, cosmetics and food packaging, etc.). These objects represent the vision of future coral reefs. They were, intentionally, created as beautiful and colourful (reflecting colours of natural reefs) but their beauty is just an illusion. Plastic beauty is superficial and temporary with no life in it. Let’s remember that while making daily choices. Little things matter.

Rafy koralowe są bardzo wrażliwe na zmiany zachodzące w otoczeniu. Jednym z czynników, który ma na to wpływ jest zakwaszenie oceanów. Innym globalnym czynnikiem obumierania i blaknięcia koralowców jest wzrastająca temperatura wody. Gdy temperatura podnosi się powyżej pewnego punktu symbiotyczny związek koralowców i koegzystujących z nimi stworzeń zostaje zaburzony. Wybielone koralowce przestają rosnąć, a jeśli ich uszkodzenie jest bardzo poważne – obumierają całkowicie. Szacuje się, że do 2030 roku zagrożonych będzie 90% raf na całym świecie, a do 2050 roku wszystkie będą zagrożone .

Na projekt składają się fotografie obiektów, które w całości zostały wykonane z plastiku jednorazowego użytku (butelek, kubków, słomek, opakowań po kosmetykach, żywności, etc.). Są to reprezentacje rafy przyszłości. Jeśli nie powstrzymamy produkcji plastiku a zwłaszcza opakowań jednorazowych – doprowadzimy do unicestwienia rafy, a w jej miejsce powstaną takie właśnie syntetyczne wytwory Antropocenu.
